Background: While underground storage caverns come is all sizes
and shapes, their irregular shapes sometimes domed, other times flat-topped,
sometimes & and skinny, other times short & squat are often envisioned as
relatively smooth-sided vessels. While this may be true in areas with
geographically 'good' salt, there are some areas where this is definitely not
the case. The striated salt formations of the Central US come immediately to
mind.
Our customer’s story: A large storage facility needed a
survey of a "Christmas tree" cavern in just such a less than optimum, striated
salt dome and called in the Gearhart-Sonasearch Cavern Surveyor 07 survey team
to do the job. Despite the sometimes amazing irregularities and dramatic
discontinuities presented by the cavern, not to mention the fact that a partial
roof collapse had occurred just a few weeks prior, the Cavern Surveyor 07 team
completed the survey in a single pass over less than three hours. Another
successfully survey with another satisfied cavern owner provided with accurate,
timely and unambiguous well characterization and volumetric data.
